Lagna, Moon sign and Sun sign: what is the difference?
Updated 7 November 2026 · Niluna
In Vedic astrology, three positions describe you: the Lagna (ascendant), the Moon sign (rashi) and the Sun sign. Vedic astrology gives the most weight to the Lagna and the Moon.
Lagna: your body and life path
The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why an exact birth time matters so much. The Lagna sets your twelve houses: career, marriage, money and every other area of life.
Moon sign: your mind and emotions
The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days. Your Moon sign and nakshatra shape your emotional nature, start your Vimshottari dasha, and are used for kundli matching and Sade Sati.
Why your Vedic sign may differ from your Western sign
Western astrology usually uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. The gap between them, the ayanamsa, is now about 24 degrees, so many people find their Vedic Sun sign is the sign before their Western one.
